Bottom Line. The Nikon 24 120mm is indeed the cauliflower of lenses. It’s not flashy and it doesn’t have legions of devoted, rowdy fans. While the Nikon 24 120mm isn’t the flagship Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. But it’s a solid lens that provides versatility, quality and performance at a great value.
Like the 16-85mm before it, the 16-80mm f/2.8-4 isn’t a big lens, all things considered. It seems appropriately downsized for DX. Compared to the 24-120mm f/4 FX zoom it most directly compares to for FX, it’s 0.7” (17.5mm) shorter and almost 9 ounces (230g) lighter. This is exactly what we wanted from Nikon, frankly.

That said, I don't think either Nikon or most consumers will care that the filter set matches anymore, especially between a 16-35 and a 24-70 f/2.8. Yes - but matching will be good between 16-35 with 70-200 or 24-70 with 70-200. Currently the 16-35 f/4 is matched up with 70-200 f/2.8 @ 77mm filter size. The 24-70 VR and the 70-200 does not match.
